Belgian War Grave Izel

At the municipal cemetery of Izel is the grave of Edouard FLAMION.
He was Sergeant Major 12th Line 3rd Bat. 10th Cie.
Fallen on the field of honor in Liery (Retinne) on the night of August 5 to 6, 1914, at the age of 26.

Edouard Flamion died in the first days of the war during the battle of Liège.
In the morning of August 4, 1914, the German declaration of war was handed over in Brussels. A few hours later, the first German troops crossed the border and advanced towards Liège, about 25 kilometers from the border. On August 5 at 10 p.m. General Otto von Emmich opened the attack on the fortresses around Liège. These fortresses formed a blockade for the German army in their advance towards France. The German 38th and 43rd Brigades tried to break through in the south between Boncelles and the Ourthe, but were beaten back. The German 34th Brigade crossed the Maas in the north at Lixhe.
During the night of 5 to 6 August, the real attack on Liège began. The city was bombed from a zeppelin with 12 bombs of 50 and 100 kg. The airship was badly damaged by Belgian artillery and crashed in Bonn.
Flamion perished during these initial battles and bombings.
He was initially buried in Retinne, then reburied in Wandre Military Cemetery. It was not until December 1924 that he was transferred to the cemetery of Izel.
