During World War I the railway was particularly important for the German troops. They transported equipment from Roulers towards their positions around Ypres.
During the Third Battle of Ypres, the front moved forward along the railway line towards Passchendaele with great difficulty. For the Australians it was their ‘Road to Passchendaele’. It was the only passable road in a completely destroyed muddy landscape and that was vital during the Battle of Broodseinde on 4 October 1917. On that day, the Australians took the entire terrain between the station and Tyne Cot.
