Monument Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment

On Monte Assoro near the castle in the Parco Urbano di Assoro is a monument placed to commemorate the heroic climb from the men of the Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment in the night of the 21st of July 1943. They climbed Monte Assoro in the night of the 21st of July to avoid a frontal attack.
Monte Assoro was a terrace shaped mountain and 20 men from every Rifle Company climbed the mountain only with handgrenades and handweapons. Due to a clear night the Canadians of the Hasty P's (their nickname) could see the moonlight shining on the helmets of the Germans.

After the men of the Hasty P's conquered Monte Assoro they got back up from the Royal Canadian Regiment and 48th Highlanders of Canada the next day. They supplied the men with rations and ammunition. With the help of the Royal Canadian Artillery Assoro was liberated on the 22nd of July 1943.

From Monte Assoro there is a stunning view of the landscape and the height of the mountain itself.
