German 105mm gun Lage Zwaluwe

German 105mm artillery from WWII found in 1989 in the griend between the 2 Moerdijk bridges by a member of the local history society ‘Willem Snickerieme’. Heavy fighting took place in the vicinity of these bridges. It is the howitzer from a piece of motorised artillery : the Sturmhaubitze 42 (StuH 42, type-identification SdKfz (Sonder Kraftfahrzeug) 142/2). During the defence of the Moerdijk bridges, it was removed from the Stuh42 by the Germans and placed on a more mobile affair, and deposited in the floodplain of the Hollandsch Diep when the German troops withdrew.

Placed by the local history society in consultation with the Brabantse Delta water board. Unveiled on 5 September 2008 by the chairman of the local history society Mr M.B.G. V.d. Veeke.

The first two photos are of the current location. The cannon used to stand near the mill ‘Schuddebeurs’.
