Sicherheitsdienst Office

The Sicherheitsdienst was located in Heemraadssingel 226. The local chef was Herbert J. Wölk.

The SD in the Netherlands only consists of 300 to 350 police officers, but nevertheless manages to spread an atmosphere of terror and fear among the population during the occupation. The organization has its headquarters in The Hague and Aussen(dienst)stellen (outposts) in six major cities, including Rotterdam.

The SD is engaged in combating the resistance, the persecution of Jews and certain forms of ordinary crime, such as black trade. The SD is largely dependent on the cooperation of the Dutch police. Arrested persons usually only stay for a short time at the Heemraadssingel, after the first interrogation they are often taken to the prison in Scheveningen, popularly known as the 'Oranjehotel'. Detainees can be released with a warning or fine, brought before a German court or detained indefinitely in 'Schutzhaft' (a type of preventive detention) in a concentration camp without trial. From September 1944, the SD can also independently liquidate resistance fighters. Many arrested resistance members are held captive to serve as victims in reprisals.

The building has since been demolished.
