Office Kriegsmarine

The Kriegsmarine also opened an office on Heemraadssingel.
In August 1940, a number of barges that had been converted into landing craft were moored in Coolhaven in connection with the intended invasion of England. These barges were equipped with two aircraft engines that were placed on a scaffolding at the rear of the boats. The propellers apparently had to serve for extra propulsion. The boats regularly circled a few hundred meters in this harbor basin, with the aircraft engines making an immense noise.
