Memorial Forced Laborers Hochmoor

The monument consisting of a large stone with plaque was unveiled in 2010 and was placed there in memory of the 426 forced laborers who were deployed in and around Gescher in the area.

The memorial reads:
"IN MEMORY OF THE PEOPLE DURING THE
NATIONAL SOCIALISM FAR FROM HOME FORCED LABOR IN INDUSTRY, AGRICULTURE AND BUSINESS. THEY LOST THEIR FREEDOM, DIGNITY AND HEALTH.

IN THE PERIOD 1939-1945, 426 PEOPLE WERE EMPLOYED AS FORCE WORKERS IN THE CURRENT AREA OF THE CITY OF GESCHER. THEY CAME FROM RUSSIA, UKRAINE, NETHERLANDS, POLAND, FRANCE, ITALY, CAUCASUS, GEORGIA, SERBIA, SLOVAKIA AND TURKMENISTAN.

THE BIGGEST CAMP WAS NOT FAR FROM THIS PLACE, AND WAS ASSIGNED TO FORMER TURF PROCESSING COMPANY KLASMANN. OVER 140 PEOPLE HAD TO DIG TURF UNDER HARD CONDITIONS. SEVERAL LOST THEIR LIVES IN THIS.

SO THAT SUCH A THING NEVER TAKES PLACE AGAIN, THIS MONUMENT SHALL REMEMBER THE WRONG SUCCESS .

MUNICIPALITY OF GESCHER, OCTOBER 2010"
