War Memorial 3rd Infantry Regiment Imde

Monument in memory of the soldiers of the 3rd Regiment Hunters on Foot of the Belgian army who fell here on August 24, 1914.

Text on the information board:
"Here, Belgian soldiers unexpectedly came under German fire.
A platoon of Germans came out of the Paardeweidebos and another platoon made an enclosing movement towards the southwest of the park of Goethals Castle. On the Belgian side, the death toll rose to fifteen and the wounded and the remaining tried to escape along the culvert under the provincial road to return to the village via the stream on the other side.
Others took cover behind the wall of the bridge, including Sergeant Paul Dutrieux: "...when I arrived at a small bridge I came out of the moat...the Germans were now approaching us across the meadow...I left myself at the corner of the bridge immediately fall to my knees … I had fired eight or ten shots at the most, when a bullet brushed against my stomach, broke the butt of my rifle and shattered my right forearm … then the lieutenant (Ghesquière) was shot in the head … two soldiers dragged him away and two others supported me to get away…"
