At this location a British Vickers Wellington bomber crashed on the night of 5 to 6 August 1941. This plane with six occupants was shot down by pilot Lieutenant Hans Redlich of the German Luftwaffe.
The six crew members: pilot Lichtfield, pilot Jones, sergeant Boutle, sergeant Lawson, sergeant Lambert and sergeant Walker were injured. At the request of Mayor Victor Mertens, Doctor Eugene Homans went to the crash site to take care of the injured. They were taken to the nearest house and Dr. Homans spent hours with the wounded soldiers, tending their wounds and administering morphine to the three most seriously injured.
They were all captured by the Germans and after being treated in Leuven, they were taken to Poland as prisoners of war. They all received the war decorations 'War Medal' and 'Star'.
This English bomber flew from Marham in England and had as target Frankfurt Manheim Karlsruhe in Germany.
