In Zingem, the Scheldt Bridge was blown up around May 20, 1940 to stop the German advance.
In the heavy fighting that followed in the two days that followed, there were heavy casualties on both sides. The Germans were able to cross the Scheldt via the partly destroyed bridge, but were driven back by the Belgians.
When the bridge was rebuilt after the war, a memorial was placed on the bridge. The bridge was called "Bridge of the Third Huntsmen on Foot".
