Plot of Honor Victims National Socialism

At the railway station of Soest, in February 1945 a camp was created for 504 prisoners from Neuengamme. They had to repair the bombed station. At end of March, 128 sick prisoners were replaced by 100 Russian prisoners from Buchenwald.

95 inmates were killed by bombardments and buried in this plot on Bad Sassendorf cemetery. On 4 April 1945, the surviving inmates were transferred and later liberated at Ebensee.

The original plaque mentions the name of one buried inmate, as respondent of all casualties: Jan Derk Bunink from Zwolle (the Netherlands), who was killed on 23 February 1945.

Investigation in 1958 found out that 58 victims were from France. It is unknown these victims were repatriated. Seven victims were Dutch. For them, the Dutch War Graves Commission (Oorlogsgravenstichting) erected a separate remembrance stone with their names.
