Known as a Marian sanctuary as early as 1150, it has been the destination of devout pilgrims for many centuries. From 1510 to 1890 parish church for Marienberg, Scherpenseel, Grotenrath and Rimburg repeatedly afflicted by fire, robbery and war, this venerable church was completely destroyed on October 1st, 1944 by a willful blast.
