Memorial Saint Barbara Fort Tancrémont

Saint Barbara is the patron saint of several dangerous professions such as artillerymen, miners, infantrymen, telegraphers, engineers and firefighters.

Commemorated are;

CRITS Jean-Baptiste, age 25, soldier with the Regiment de la Fortresse de Liège (RFL) of Fort Tancrémont, killed in Sthelen (Germany) which is now Strzelin in Poland on February 15, 1945.

GROSJEAN Albert, age 27, soldier with the Regiment de la Fortresse de Liège (RFL) of Fort Tancrémont, killed in Saint Pölten (GermanyP on March 20, 1945.

HEROUFOSSE F., no details known.

HUYSMANS Pierre, age 19 !, soldier with the Regiment de la Fortresse de Liège (RFL) of Fort Tancrémont, died of wounds received at Bunker Vesdre at Pepinster on May 15, 1940.

LAGUESSE Adrien, age 33, member of the Armée Secret, died while capturing 27 German soldiers who were in the Franchimont forest. A group of the Armée Secret went looking for the men, during the firefight with the Germans Adrien was fatally struck in his chest and died on the spot at Franchimont on September 11, 1944. Note; the region to which Franchimont belonged had already been liberated by the U.S. Army at that time. These were soldiers cut off from their units trying to make their way to Germany.

MONVILLE Clement, age 21, soldier with the Regiment de la Fortresse de Liège (RFL) at Fort Tancrémont, killed in action on May 10, 1940 at Bunker Vesdre at Pepinster.

ZABEAU René, age 31, sergeant the Regiment de la Fortresse de Liège (RFL) at Fort Tancrémont, for having captured a German soldier while defending his observation post on May 16, 1940, and shot him dead when he tried to flee. In 1941, he was brought before the military court at the Citadelle of Liège for this event. There he was sentenced to death for the death of this German soldier; he was executed on May 21, 1941.
