Stumbling Stones Bakenessergracht 48

Stolpersteinen Bakenessergracht 48, Haarlem

On April 14, 2022, stumbling stones were placed here for the De Jong family. This family consisted of father Simon, mother Rachel de Jong-Cohen de Solla, and their children Sara van Koningsbrugge-de Jong and Schoontje, Hartog Simon, Jacob, Elie and Corrie de Jong. A seventh child has already died before the war. Sara was married and had two children, who survived the war. Father Simon and the sons Hartog Simon (Hans) and Jacob were in the trade. Schoontje stayed in the Provincial Hospital Santpoort "Meer en Berg". She was hiding there with 14 other Jewish patients. On February 2, 1943, a cordon of soldiers is placed around the site. After a 24-hour search, all 15 Jews in hiding are discovered and taken away by betrayal.

The small brass plaques of 10 by 10 cm, in the pavement in front of houses of which the (mostly Jewish) residents were persecuted and mostly murdered by the National-Socialists, mention the name, date of birth and place (mostly a concentration camp) and date of death.

In many other cities and villages, mainly in Germany but also in other European countries, the memorials also can be found. There are already many thousands of these plaques and their number is still counting. Almost all Stolpersteine are laid by the German artist himself, Gunter Demnig.
