Stumbling Stones Jansstraat 87

Stolpersteinen Jansstraat 87, Haarlem

On March 3, 2022, stumbling blocks were placed here for: Elias Goud, his wife Bertha Goud-Staal and their children Truitje Sara (Truus) and David Goud.
Elias Goud had a kosher pastry shop at this address, his wife Bertha worked in the business. Truitje Sara worked as an office clerk at the Dutch-Israeli Community of Haarlem.
David was proofreader at the Haarlem printing house Joh. Enschede. He was also attendant of the synagogue of the Dutch-Israeli Community of Haarlem. In Westerbork, David married Frederieka Zilversmit a day before their deportation to Auschwitz.

The small brass plaques of 10 by 10 cm, in the pavement in front of houses of which the (mostly Jewish) residents were persecuted and mostly murdered by the National-Socialists, mention the name, date of birth and place (mostly a concentration camp) and date of death.

In many other cities and villages, mainly in Germany but also in other European countries, the memorials also can be found. There are already many thousands of these plaques and their number is still counting. Almost all Stolpersteine are laid by the German artist himself, Gunter Demnig.
