War Memorial Sint-Joost-ten-Node

The war memorial in Sint-Joost-ten-Node commemorates the military and civilian victims of the First and Second World War.

At the top of the sculpture group is the figure of a woman, in a draped cloth.
She symbolizes the fatherland. She stands proudly upright, the fatherland has survived the tragedy of the war.
At her feet lies a man who gave his life for her.
The lying lion and the soldier show the pain and suffering of the martyrs.
The bronze part is a work of sculptor Guillaume Charlier, resident of St.Joost.
In 1915 he applied for permission to make the statue at his own expense.
The inauguration took place on July 21, 1920.

At the front is the coat of arms of St. Joost ten Node.
On the pedestal is the text in the two national languages:
" 1914 – 1918
1940 – 1945
The municipality of Saint-Josse-ten-Node
To its inhabitants fallen on the field of honour, or shot. To its fighters, resistance fighters, prisoners and political deportees."

The names engraved in alphabetical order on the sides refer to the soldiers who died during the First World War.
After the Second World War, the monument was adapted and the names of the victims of this war were added.
