During the First World War, villa Zonneweelde – then the newly built villa Vald'Ante – was the residence of, among others, the reserve captain of the engineers
Robert Thys. He had been in charge of the underwater world between Nieuwpoort and Diksmuide in October 1914 and the configuration after that in command of the company that sustained the inundations. The men of this company, including the legendary heroes of the first hour, Hendrik Geeraert, Frans Cop and Kamiel Van Belle, were billeted in the adjacent twin villa La Roche. After the First World War, Robert Thys built up a successful career in Congo and was one of the founders of the founding of Sneta, the predecessor of Sabena (Text info board).
