Stumbling Stones August Bebel-Strasse/Bahnhofstrasse

These memorial stones (so called Stolpersteine of stumbling blocks) commemorate:

Alfred Markus (born. 1894, 'Schutzhaft'1938 Sachsenhausen, deported to Zamosc 1942, fate unknown)
Klara Markus born. Landau (born 1896, deported to Zamosc 1942, fate unknown)
Günther Markus (born 1921, 'Schutzhaft'1938 Sachsenhausen, deported to Zamosc 1942, fate unknown)
Inge Markus (born 1931, deported to Zamosc 1942, fate unknown)
Dr. Leo Markes (born 1887, 'Schutzhaft' 1938 Sachsenhausen, deported to Theresienstadt 1942, murdered in Auschwitz 1944)
Hilde Markes born Meinhardt (born 1900, deported to Theresienstadt 1942, murdered in Auschwitz 1944)

The small copper plaques, in the pavement in front of houses of which the (mostly Jewish) residents were murdered by the Nazis, mention the name, date of birth and place (mostly a concentration camp) and date of death.

In many other cities, mainly in Germany but also in other European countries, the memorials also can be found. There are already many thousands of these plaques and their number is still counting. Almost all Stolpersteine are laid by the German artist himself, Gunter Demnig.
