War Memorial and Burial Vault Old Cemetery Torhout

This monument in memory of the victims of the Second World War was erected in 1949. The monument also serves as a headstone. On the back are the names and photos of the war victims.
A combination of a war memorial (on the street side) and a burial vault (on the side of the cemetery) is unique in Belgium.
Text on the front along the street: "IN GOD’S / PEACE / THEY LIVE / FOR THE / PEACE / WE WORK / 1940 - 1945"
On the back along the cemetery: six memorial plaques with the names of 7 war victims.
PACKET Marcel, resistance fighter sentenced to death and executed in Gent on 2 September 1943
PACKET Jules, resistance fighter sentenced to death and executed in Gent on 2 September 1943
LAMOTE André, resistance fighter died in deportation in Bad-Segeberg (G) on 29 June 1945
PANNECOUCKE Theophile , resistance fighter executed in deportation, beheaded in Wolfenbüttel (G) on 15 June 1944
VANCOMPERNOLLE Joseph, soldier 38th Line killed in action at Lummen on 12 May 1940
STRUBBE Egide, resistance fighter executed in deportation, beheaded in Wolfenbüttel (D) on 15 June 1944
DECLOEDT Georges, soldier Brigade Piron 1 Bn, victim of a train collision. He died on 13 August 1945 in the British General Hospital in Hau, North Rhine-Westphalia (G).
