Monument of the Gendarmerie

The "Monument of the Gendarmerie" is a work by sculptor Eugène De Bremaecker and Isidore De Rudder. It was inaugurated in 1921.

From 1910 to 1919, each gendarme paid 10 cents a month to raise the necessary funds for this monument.
In 1948 a medal was sold to raise money for the erection of a wall behind the monument containing the 303 names of gendarmes who fell in service.
Gendarmerie Auguste Hosdey, stationed in Ixelles, was the model for the monument.

The gendarmerie in the group of statues is turned to the left, he is wearing a high bear hat and a saber standing upright on the ground and with "LEX" next to him on the right.
On the pedestal in front is in the two national languages in gold print:
"To the officers, non-commissioned officers, brigadiers and gendarmes, fallen for law and country"
