Memorial Veterans Sint-Kruis-Winkel

In 2020, some 36 tombstones were removed from the field of honor of the veterans of the First World War. Part of it had been neglected, partly because sometimes there were no relatives left to maintain the grave. The human remains remained underground.

Out of respect, a new communal war memorial in Corten steel was designed in place of the arena of honor. It was unveiled on November 11, 2021.
The memorial at the memorial site has the silhouette of a Belgian infantry soldier in which the names and the years of birth and death of the local heroes are carved out.
The path to the soldier is formed from the still usable parts of the tombstones of the old warrior graves.
The city remains grateful to its veterans for what they have done for the freedom we know today.
