Memorial Assyrian Genocide 1915

On May 22, 2015, a stela was inaugurated in Etterbeek to commemorate the centenary of the 1915 genocide by the Ottoman Empire against the Syrians, Assyrians and Chaldeans.
The monument of 2 meters 80 represents through three characters holding hands the different peoples of Mesopotamia and the Christian minorities of the East.

On the foot is the inscription:
"This monument is dedicated to the memory of more than five hundred thousand Syrian Christians (Syriac), martyrs who were victims of the Genocide (Sayfo) of 1915 committed by the Ottoman Empire"

The Assyrian or Aramean genocide was a genocide committed under the leadership of the Young Turks movement in the Ottoman Empire during the First World War.
According to eyewitnesses, including German officers and neutral diplomats, and news reports, hundreds of thousands of Assyrians living in northern Mesopotamia were forcibly deported, starved and murdered during the period 1915-1920.
