Memorial Saint Michael's Church Leuven

In the night of 10 to 11 May 1944, St. Michael's Church was hit by an Allied bomb.
The entire roof construction and the vault of the nave collapsed, miraculously the facade remained standing, completely torn from the rest of the building.
The organ loft was destroyed; the furniture suffered significant damage.
The reconstruction and restoration work started in August 1944 under the direction of architect Mispelter and professor canon Raymond Lemaire.
The church building regained its original appearance; the wooden roof construction was replaced by metal trusses.

In the entrance of the church hangs a commemorative plaque with Latin text:
"D.O.M.
Church built in 1650 and dedicated to Saint Michael's Parish in 1778.
Restored to its original beauty after the terrible destruction during the war by Pastor Leon Schammel from 1944 to 1950. Dedicated memory of the soldiers and civilians, victims of this terrible war 1940-1945.
In pious remembrance"
