LIBERATION ROUTE MARKER 645
Frisian Resistance
The Liberation Route follows the path taken by the Allies during the liberation of Europe. The route starts at Normandy and runs via Nijmegen and Arnhem towards Berlin.
In the last two years of the war, the resistance in Friesland became increasingly organized. On December 12, 1944, the Dutch Internal Forces in Friesland is founded on the orders and under the leadership of Prince Bernard. In Makkum, the resistance has been active since the outbreak of the war, and nightly weapon drops for the armed resistance take place on Kornwerderzand. In the last year of the war, about 3000 armed resistance fighters were active in Friesland.
