LIBERATION ROUTE MARKER 666
Never again the way it used to be
The Liberation Route follows the path taken by the Allies during the liberation of Europe. The route starts at Normandy and runs via Nijmegen and Arnhem towards Berlin.
Den Helder suffered very badly during the Second World War. When the Canadian liberators arrived on May 8, 1945, the city had only 9,000 inhabitants, a quarter of the population before the war. The naval port, the shipyard, the military airport and the location on the North Sea have been of great strategic importance to the German occupier since the outbreak of the Second World War and therefore also a target of the Allies. No other place in the Netherlands was bombed as often as Den Helder during the Second World War.
