At the location of this monument, a battle between the German occupiers and French resistance fighters took place on the night of June 6-7, 1944. The French walked into an ambush set up by the Germans. Five resistance fighters were killed and 18 others, including a woman, were executed on the Champ de Mars in Béziers, ironically in front of the house where French resistance hero Jean Moulin was born.
