Hellevoetsluis was an important naval port for the Germans. Hellevoetsluis was therefore increasingly attacked by allied fighter-bombers. Unfortunately, those bombs also ended up on the houses. That is how it happened on January 24, 1945. A bomb fell on the Oostkade, destroying two buildings.
The family who lived in one building escaped with burns and cuts, but of the couple in the other building, only the master of the house survived. It was extra sad that in that house the Herwijer family and their daughter were visiting relatives and they all died. They had just been evacuated from Nieuw-Helvoet to Oostvoorne.
