Evacuation Memorial 'Vlucht' Arnhem

This memorial commemorates the forced evacuation of the inhabitants of Arnhem shortly after the Battle of Arnhem was lost. The text on the plaque reads:

On September 23, 1944, the order for the evacuation of Arnhem was given by the German Wehrmacht. More than 90,000 Arnhem residents had to leave the city in a hurry without knowing when they could return home. They flee to the north in a mass exodus. They could not return until after the liberation. They came home to a looted and destroyed city. At the bottom of the Apeldoornseweg you will find the evacuation monument that commemorates this event. The Apeldoornseweg was one of the major roads during the evacuation.
