This monument was officially inaugurated on June 6, 2019, in Arromanches on the 75th anniversary of the landing. in recognition of all veterans of the Battle of Normandy. It was originally designed for the RHS Chelsea Garden Show where it was on display in May 2019. Veteran Bill Pendell was chosen to represent the veterans, landing on Gold Beach at the age of 22.
At the beginning of the garden he sits musingly at a younger haze of himself and the other soldiers wading ashore evading the obstacles. The young soldiers consist of thousands of fleets welded together. The effigy of himself was carved from one block of sandstone (Millstone Grit),
Unfortunately, Bill Pendell was unable to attend the inauguration, having passed away in December 2018 at the age of 97.
