Memorial Motor Stirling LK209

Monument to a crashed Short Stirling.

The memorial consists of one of the four engines of the Stirling LK209 MA T of 161 squadron of the Royal Air Force that crashed on March 23, 1945. Elsewhere on Vlieland is a monument at the crash site.

The four-engined bomber was sent out for a weapon drop for the resistance movement in the Netherlands.

The crew of the aircraft consisted of:

Navigator, Navigator, Ronald A. Caston, 23 years
Operator/gunner, Wireless operator/Air gunner, Reginald Swift, 22 years

Gunner, Air Gunner, Alexander R. Paton, 24 years
Tail Gunner, Air Gunner, Joseph T. White, Age 23

Only the rear gunner Joseph White survived the crash.
