Memorial VC Thomas Whitham
On this spot is a commemorative plaque for the Victoria Cross that Thomas Whitham earned here in the field in front. Thomas was assigned to the Coldstream Guards and fought here during the Third Battle of Ypres.
Nearby was Captain's Farm and was a German machine gun in a concrete structure that fired into the flank of the attacking battalion. Whitham went from bomb crater to bomb crater and attacked the machine gun and captured 1 German officer and 2 soldiers.
