Memorial 2nd Lt Cary Lewis Gray

2nd Lt Cary Lewis Gray was born on 2 June 1921 in Roanoke County Virginia. He volunteered for the US Airforce and he became a fighter pilot on the P47 Thunderbolt.

On 17th June 1944, as part of the 513th Fighter Bomber Squadron, 406th Fighter Bomber Group, 9th Air Force, he flew the P47 Thunderbolt 42-8544. This unit was carrying out a supporting mission for the ground troops in Normandy, in the Brix region. Suddenly they came into severe anti aircraft shelling. The formation broke up. Over the radio the others heard of Gray being hit. His plane went down. Lt Funk saw him landing unharmed with his parachute. Gray was shot by German troops.. On 20th June 1944 he was declared MIA.
