Bailey Bridge Bocholt

Bailey Bridge Bocholt

Text on the sign on the bridge:
After the construction of the Bocholt-Herentals Canal (1843 -1846) there was a swing bridge at the confluence of the Zuid-Willesmvaart and the Bocholt-Herentals Canal. This was in use until 1935. When the canal was widened in 1934, it was replaced by a steel arch bridge, which was destroyed together with the other bridges over the canal during the invasion of the German army in May 1940 to stop the advance. It was not until 1963 that the bridge was replaced by the current bridge, built by the engineers of the Belgian Army. The type of bridge was designed by the British engineer M. Donald C. Bailey and consists of a kit that can be assembled in record time.
