Former Military Airport Merzbrück

In 1914 an airstrip was created here for smaller planes and this strip was taken over by the Belgium Army after the German defeat in 1918.

During the Second World War the Luftwaffe initially used it as a trainingsfield. During the invasion of Western Europa, the Luftwaffe stationed here Stuka’s. After the battle of Western Europe, the airfield was no longer used until October 1943, then the Luftwaffe stationed here and in the surroundings Flak batteries belonging to Flakgruppe Aachen, which was part of the 7th Flak division.

During the battle of Aachen the airfield was conquered bu the US army, who started to use it from March 1945 as advanced landing ground ‘Y-46’ and stationed here P-47 fighters until the end of the war.

After the war the Belgium Airforce stationed some helicopters here.
