The Waldfriedhof in Darmstadt contains the mass grave of the civilian victims who died during the attack on the night of September 11 and September 12, 1944, by 221 Lancaster bombers and 14 Mosquitos. The British air force used a new tactic of approaching the target from different directions and being over the target at the same time. Within half an hour the attack was over and because of the firestorm that swept through the city, between 11,000 and 12,000 people were killed and 78% of the city was destroyed.
