Hampton's Legion was an all arms legion formed in South Carolina at the request of Confederate President Jefferson Davis. In May 1861 it had formed 6 companies of infantry, 4 companies of cavalry and a company of artillery under Colonel Wade Hamilton, who provided much of the finances.
Whilst the Legion did not fight as a whole unit, the individual arms fought in all of the campaigns in the Eastern theatre throughout the war, from 1st battle to last.
Wade Hampton went on to be Governor of South Carolina (1876-78) and U.S. Senator (1879-81).
