On June 1, 1942, Wellington R1615 took off from Hemswell bound for Essen, Germany. On board was a full Polish crew who volunteered to fly for the RAF.
As the aircraft crashed at a high speed almost vertically, it was concluded after investigation that it had sustained severe damage in full flight and was on fire or the pilots were fatally injured. The six Polish crew members all lost their lives in the crash.
The victims are buried at the Polish military cemetery in Lommel.
