Fort McClellan was established by the U.S. Army as Camp McClellan in July 1917. The 27th Infantry Division was trained here shortly before World War II. The base was subsequently expanded to train additional soldiers. McCellan had several artillery ranges and its own airfield, the Henry J. Reilly Field.
During WW2, some half million U.S. soldiers trained here. In 1943 a 3000-man prisoner camp was built on the Fort's property. The camp operated until 1946.
