Originally a municipal airport (Montgomery Muncipal Airport). The Army Air Corps (AAC) opened a training base here in October 1940 called Army Air Corps Basic Flying School. In the beginning of 1941 the entire complex was taken over by the air force. The air base was used during the war to train American and allied pilots. From September 1945 the airbase was hardly used and in 1948 the airfield officially came into the hands of the USAF. The airbase was renamed "Gunter Air Force Base", saw a revival during the Cold War, but again fell into disrepair. Around 1971 the complex was sold to the municipality.
During WW2 Gunter Field's auxiliary air fields were:
- Aux. #1 McLemore Auxiliary Field
- Aux. #2 Elmore Airport
