Camp Lockett

Camp Lockett was built in 1941 as a subbase of Fort Seeley in El Centro. The 11th Cavalry (horse) Regiment was stationed here. In 1942 the regiment was replaced by the 10th Cavalry (horse) Regiment. From February 1944 no more army units were stationed here and it was decided to convert the complex into a large hospital complex called Mitchell Convalescent Hospital. A small POW camp for 200 Italians was established at the complex at the same time. The Italians were replaced by Germans near the end of the war. Many original buildings from that time are still standing here.
