Fort Ord

Fort Ord began in 1917 as Gigling Field Artillery Range for troops stationed at The Predisio of Monterey. The camp was renamed Camp Ord in 1933, followed by the first permanent buildings in 1938. Over the next two years, the base was expanded and in August 1942 was renamed Fort Ord, which became home to the 7th Infantry Division. From 1943 the base became a depot for units going overseas. The base closed in 1994 and the land has been reused in many different ways, including a State Park. Many original buildings can still be seen these days.
