Camp Roberts

Camp Roberts was built by the army in 1940/41 and used as a training camp for infantry and artillery units. The complex also had a cooking/baking school and a POW camp for 900 internees. As many as 36,000 troops were stationed at Camp Roberts during the war. The base was closed in 1946 only to be reactivated a few years later (due to the outbreak of the Korean War).
