Sacramento McClellan Airport

Sacramento McClellan Airport was founded in 1935 as Pacific Air Depot. The base was renamed Sacramento Air Depot in 1938 and expanded simultaneously as a major repair and overhaul facility for P-38 and P-39 fighters. In 1940 the P-40 was added. During World War II, Sacramento Air Depot was a major supplier of combat aircraft to the Pacific region, including the famous "Doolittle Raid" on Tokyo. The base was renamed McCelland Air Force Base in 1948 and retained its important military value throughout the Cold War.
