Herbst Theatre

The United Nations Organization was founded in the Herbst Theater on June 26, 1945. A large mural inside the building commemorates this event. Six years later, in 1951, the Treaty of San Francisco declaring peace with Japan was drafted and signed here and at the War Memorial Opera House.

This was originally the Veterans Building, in honor of the veterans of the First World War. The Green Room on the 2nd floor was intended as a lounge for those veterans. The theater is part of the San Francisco War Memorial and Performing Arts Center.
