Benicia Arsenal

Benicia Arsenal was built in 1849 as Benicia Barracks and soon after became an army arsenal. In 1864, the camels of the failed Camel Corps were auctioned here. The majority ended up in zoos. In 1928, Benicia was one of the first in the country to have remote igloos made of steel and concrete for the storage of ammunition. During the Second World War, the arsenal was a distribution and repair center for ammunition. German prisoners of war were put to work here. The arsenal was closed in 1964. The bunkers are still in-situ.
