Camp San Luis Obispo

Camp San Luis Obispo was established in 1928 as Camp Merriam for the California National Guard. Just before World War II, the army took over the camp and transformed it into a divisional training base. At the same time, the camp was renamed Camp San Luis Obispo. The California National Guard and units from Nevada and Utah stationed here were merged into the 40th Infantry Division. In 1942, a battalion of Filipinos trained here. The complex also included a POW camp for 200 prisoners.
