Ellwood Oil Refinery

At about 8 pm, on the evening of February 23, 1942, the Japanese submarine I-17 surfaced close to the shore off the small community of Ellwood, near Santa Barabara. It began shelling the oil refinery, resulting in some damage. The attack was the first naval bombardment of the United States by a foreign power since the War of 1812. The site of the attack is now part of the Sandpiper Golf Club.
