Tule Lake Relocation Center was an internment camp for 16,000 ethnic Japanese. The first civilians arrived on May 27, 1942. The camp had a closed area for so-called 'troublemakers', with more fences and more watchtowers. Tule Lake was the last internment camp in the US to be closed, on March 20, 1946. Many of the original camp buildings are still standing and have been given a new function after the war. In 1972, a historical landmark plaque was placed along 3rd Ave.
