Naval Submarine Base New London

Naval Submarine Base New London was founded in 1868, but it wasn't until 1872 that the first buildings and a pier were built. From then on it was officially a U.S. Navy yard. A coaling station was built here in 1898. However, between 1898 and 1900, the base was closed and its garrison reassigned. It resumed operations during WW1, when it was used as a submarine base for the first time. After that war, the base was expanded with schools and training facilities.

On August 3, 1941, President Roosevelt departed from this base on a mission to Argentia, Newfoundland, where he secretly met with Churchill. This meeting resulted in the famous Atlantic Charter.
