Additional information from Marita Flett:
Herman Meijer hid my grandparents Mattheus Albertus (Theo) Warmerdam and Maria Johanna Warmerdam-Waaijer and their 11 children at their home between Voorshoten and Leidschendam on the river Vliet. their property is now under water at the artificial lake called Vlietland. They hid Herman Meiyer from about February 1942 to October 1943. During that time they had to move Herman to another hiding place because their farm was occupied by German troops. Two of the children Elly and Thea dressed Herman disguised as a girl. and they rode bicycles to a safe place in the Dutch subway, from there he was hidden by an elderly couple and he died the following year. My grandparents heard that he had become very ill. They loved Herman very much and were heartbroken that they could not keep him safe due to the occupation of their farm. by troops. They too were thrown out of their homes and made to live in a shed. It was a miracle that they were able to safely bring Herman to safety without being discovered by the Germans. My mother Johanna was the same age as Herman, born in the same year 1924 and she told us a lot about Herman. He loved reading and playing chess. He taught them all to play it. He was a nice person and he had a deep faith in God, like everyone else, even though he was Jewish and they were Catholic, they prayed together every night for safety.
